Foreign Children's Schools in Spain: Local Education and International Schools

The choice of an appropriate educational institution is one of the crucial questions for any family relocating to Spain. There are several types of schools that can be considered, namely, local Spanish schools and international schools.

Spanish Schools

There are public (free), concertado (state-subsidized), and private schools in Spain. Local schools use the Spanish curriculum and, depending on the region, the lessons may be conducted in regional languages (Catalan, Galician, Aranese or Basque).

Advantages

  • Easy adaptation to the local language and culture (children usually master Spanish relatively fast).
  • Building connections within the community.
  • Free education (except for expenses related to school lunches, materials, etc.)

Disadvantages

  • Large groups of students (in public schools)
  • Youngsters may need additional help with the language

International Schools

Typically, there are British, American, or IB curricula with English language instruction in international schools. Thus, international schools are the preferred option for many expats who move to Spain.

Advantages

  • Familiarity with the program and ease of relocation if necessary.
  • Greater likelihood of attending international universities.
  • Small groups of students and extensive extracurricular activities.

Disadvantages

  • Higher prices (€7,000–€25,000+ yearly).

Which School Is the Best Choice?

If you plan on staying in Spain for a longer period of time, you should opt for the local schools because:

- You wish to make your child fluent in the Spanish language.

- You prefer your child integrating into the culture of the new environment.

Alternatively, you can consider going for the international schools because:

- There is a possibility that you might have to relocate in the future.

- You desire consistency in education.

- Your child is likely to be uncomfortable with complete language immersion.
