Why South Tenerife Has Become the Favourite Destination for British Tourists

Not long ago, the typical British holiday in Spain meant tapas in Barcelona or a beach break on the Costa del Sol. But over the last decade, a new trend has emerged. Instead of mainland Spain, more and more visitors from the UK are flying straight to the Canary Islands. At the heart of this shift is Costa Adeje, a resort town in South Tenerife that offers sunshine, comfort, and adventure all year round.

Sunshine All Year in Tenerife South

The number one reason British travellers choose Tenerife over mainland Spain is simple: the weather. While parts of Spain can be chilly and rainy in winter, South Tenerife stays warm and bright. In Costa Adeje, even in January, daytime temperatures often reach 22–24°C. This reliable climate makes it one of the few places in Europe where you can count on beach days in the middle of winter.

For many visitors escaping the grey skies of the UK, knowing that they’ll land in sunshine is a huge part of Tenerife’s appeal. Alicante or Malaga may have warmer days than Britain, but they can’t guarantee the same steady climate that makes Costa Adeje such a safe choice.

Easy Flights and Smooth Travel

Tenerife South Airport is only a short drive from Costa Adeje, Los Cristianos, and Playa de las Américas. Almost every major UK airport has direct flights, and budget airlines like Jet2, easyJet, and Ryanair keep fares low. A four-hour flight might be longer than a trip to Barcelona, but with sunshine waiting on arrival, most travellers see it as well worth the extra time.

Costa Adeje Resorts and Accommodation Choices

The resort scene in Costa Adeje has grown rapidly. Modern hotels, family-friendly apartments, and luxury all-inclusive resorts line the coast. Families love the convenience of all-inclusive packages, while younger travellers and couples often look for boutique hotels, private villas, or eco-friendly stays. From beachfront resorts to hillside villas with views of the Atlantic, Tenerife South offers more variety than many mainland destinations.

Nature, Adventure and More Than Just Beaches

The south of Tenerife is famous for its golden beaches like Playa del Duque and Playa de Fañabé. But beyond the sunbeds, there’s plenty to explore. Mount Teide, Spain’s highest peak, is a short drive away and offers hiking trails, stargazing, and breathtaking views. From Costa Adeje’s marina, boat trips head out daily for dolphin and whale watching. Meanwhile, Playa de las Américas is the island’s hotspot for surfing and nightlife.

This mix of relaxation and activity makes Tenerife South attractive to both families and adventure-seekers.

A British Community with a Spanish Twist

Part of the island’s popularity is how welcoming it feels. Los Cristianos is home to a strong British community, with pubs, cafés, and shops that make first-time visitors feel at ease. At the same time, South Tenerife has a strong Canarian identity. Local fiestas, traditional food like papas arrugadas, and wines from Tenerife’s volcanic vineyards give holidays a distinctly Spanish flavour. It’s the mix of familiar and authentic that keeps many tourists coming back year after year.

Safe, Reliable and Sustainable

In recent years, travellers have been looking for destinations that feel secure and dependable. Tenerife ticks all the boxes. As part of Spain and the EU, it offers good healthcare, reliable infrastructure, and high safety standards. On top of that, the island is working hard to promote sustainable tourism, with eco-hotels, renewable energy projects, and nature reserves protected from overdevelopment.

Why Costa Adeje Keeps Winning

Whether it’s retirees looking for winter sun, families after a stress-free holiday, or young travellers wanting beaches and nightlife, Costa Adeje and South Tenerife deliver it all. The combination of guaranteed sunshine, easy access from the UK, modern resorts, and unforgettable experiences has made this part of the Canary Islands the number one choice for British holidaymakers.

For many, Tenerife is no longer an alternative to mainland Spain. It’s the first destination they think of when planning a holiday. And at the centre of that popularity stands Costa Adeje sunny, welcoming, and packed with reasons to return.
